Context
- The horrendous fire of April 15, 2019 devastated the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris and led to the loss of its entire roof, the spire and part of the Gothic vaults. The cast iron of the lead roof and the enormous quantity of water poured onto the stone structure, which was already in a fragile state before the fire, have made it even weaker.
- The current objective for the restoration work is to enable the cathedral to be re-opened in 2024, but it is likely that more time will be needed for all of the restoration to be completed.
- This being the case, and given the enormous sums of money that will be needed, it is necessary to call upon the generosity of donors across the world to contribute to financing the significant program of restoration of one of the world’s religious icons.
Objectives and activities
The charitable project aims to participate in various phases of the cathedral’s restoration and reconstruction. This involves, first of all, the provision of financing to secure the building and then its restoration, namely:
- The installation of flooring in the upper and lower parts of the vaults
- Securing the flying buttresses
- Assembling scaffolding for the spire
- Disposal of all the waste created by the fire
- Protection of the stained-glass windows
- Installation of a permanent umbrella to keep water out of the building
- Restoration of the building, including the stained-glass windows and the organs.
