Expanding Mental Health Support to Parents of Adolescents

Context

Across North America, families are facing an escalating youth mental health crisis. Some 40% of high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and nearly 1 in 5 have seriously considered suicide. It is estimated that nearly 50% of adolescents will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives.

Despite this development, one critical group remains largely unsupported: parents. While systems are designed to intervene with children and teens, very few resources exist to equip parents with the tools, support, and care they need to effectively navigate these challenges. Parents are often the first to recognize when something is wrong, yet many feel overwhelmed, isolated, and unsure of how to respond. Barriers such as cost, stigma, limited access to services, and geographic isolation, especially in rural or underserved areas, prevent many from receiving the help they need.

Without adequate support, parents may experience increased anxiety, helplessness, and decreased confidence – directly impacting their ability to support their child. Strengthening parents is one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes for children, making this initiative a critical upstream solution to a growing crisis.
