I have decided to fundraise for a project implemented with an amazing organisation called Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation. The Foundation supports the important work of Dr Catherine Hamlin, a pioneering Australian surgeon who committed her life to helping women in Ethiopia with devastating childbirth injuries.
In Ethiopia, around 50% of women experience childbirth without medical care. Many women sustain horrific childbirth injuries like obstetric fistula, which leave them incontinent. They are often abandoned by their families and communities and hide away in shame and isolation.
I am travelling to Ethiopia as part of a self-funded Hamlin Ethiopian Adventure to see first-hand the incredible work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. As part of my commitment, I am fundraising to directly help provide life-changing surgery and rehabilitation to women.
Just $700 CAD can provide one life-changing surgery to repair an obstetric fistula and restore a woman’s health, dignity, and future. My fundraising target is $4,000, which will help multiple women receive the urgent treatment and compassionate care they deserve.
Please consider donating to give these women the chance to reclaim their lives. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!
Obstetric fistula is one of the most tragic childbirth injuries, yet it is entirely preventable and treatable. Beyond the physical trauma, 93% of women also suffer the heartbreak of losing their baby. Many are left unable to work or perform daily tasks, and are excluded from their communities.
For over 60 years, the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation has pioneered a holistic approach to treatment in Ethiopia, combining surgery, counseling, rehabilitation, education, and prevention. The goal of this project is bold and clear: to eradicate obstetric fistula in Ethiopia, forever.
Myriad Canada is working with Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia and the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation on this charitable project. Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) comprises six fistula hospitals including the world famous Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, the Hamlin College of Midwives, 80 Hamlin supported midwifery clinics, and a Rehabilitation and Reintegration program at Desta Mender.
Originally established by pioneering Australian surgeons Drs Catherine and Reg Hamlin, today HFE is a much loved and respected Ethiopian Charity run entirely by Ethiopian professionals. In a single year, they treat more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 1,000 fistula and fistula-related surgeries. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals — Mekele and Bahir Dar in the north, Yirgalem in the south, Harar in the east and Metu in the southwest — have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery. They provide counseling and a range of training courses to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. Hamlin’s Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or to establish their own small businesses. Last year, Hamlin midwives delivered more than 30,000 babies.
