Making Pregnancy and Childbirth Safer in Nepal

Context

In Nepal, approximately 800 women and 11,000 newborns continue to die each year in the period around pregnancy and labor. Most of these deaths could be prevented with simple fixes, like having a well-trained healthcare provider at delivery and adequate medical equipment at the health facility.

Goals

The goal is to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for all, so that mothers and their newborns don’t just survive but thrive. This is envisioned with a robust local healthcare system that prioritizes women’s and newborns’ unique needs, supported by the whole community.

Activities

Activities may include:

• Provide essential medical equipment.
• Train skilled Birth Attendants on lifesaving skills.
• Renovate birthing centers.

Key Performance Indicators to be Reached (KPIs)

KPIs may include:

• Number of mothers and infants able to access quality care;
• Number of healthcare providers trained;
• Number of birthing centers upgraded.

Myriad Canada is working with One Heart Worldwide on this project, a US-based nonprofit whose mission is to make pregnancy and childbirth safer with a specific focus on underserved women and newborns in Nepal. They envision a locally-led health system that provides equitable access to quality care and specialize in areas with the lowest human development indices, where other organizations rarely operate. Their model, the Network of Safety, is specifically designed to address the systemic barriers to care faced by pregnant women and their newborns living in remote and underserved areas.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes.
