Context

The Farankaraina Forest, a dense tropical rainforest that is home to several threatened plant and animal species, is located in northeastern Madagascar. This part of the country is globally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity. Most of the plants and animals found there are endemic and exist nowhere else in the world.

Approximately 20,000 people living in nine villages surround the forest. Poverty, limited access to education and a lack of jobs and economic opportunities mean that many people depend on the forest’s resources for their livelihoods, food and daily needs. In addition, population growth, low-productivity and environmentally harmful farming practices, and climate change are increasing the pressure on the forest.

Goals

The project seeks to introduce and implement initiatives specifically designed to improve the income and livelihoods of people living around the Farankaraina Forest in ways that do not damage the forest’s resources. Expanding environmental education, encouraging leadership among youth and women in conservation, and strengthening collaboration with other NGOs and local authorities are also essential elements of the project.

Activities

  • Support local farmers to adopt more modern and sustainable agricultural practices in order to increase production, profitability and food security;
  • Work with local schools to introduce biodiversity conservation into education for children and youth;
  • Create youth-led environmental clubs in each village surrounding the Farankaraina Forest. Support local young people to become leaders in their communities by developing projects that improve food security and biodiversity conservation;
  • Encourage talented and motivated young people to continue their education;
  • Support the creation of women’s associations and help them develop income-generating activities, build savings to create small businesses, and improve the marketing of their handicrafts and other products;
  • Develop and support women leaders in the field of conservation;
  • Involve local communities in practical conservation projects such as forest restoration;
  • Support local farmers in obtaining international certification for their agricultural land and work with local and international partners to help them bring their products to local and international markets.
