Context

The Koloboi community in Turkana, Kenya, faces chronic food insecurity due to prolonged droughts, poverty, and limited access to basic resources. This has led to widespread malnutrition, particularly among children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Hunger directly affects school attendance, as children are often too weak or are forced to stay home to help their families survive, leading to higher dropout rates and long-term setbacks in education. Health outcomes are also severely impacted: undernutrition weakens the immune system, increases vulnerability to disease, and contributes to high rates of stunted growth and child mortality. Socially, the lack of food creates tension, forces displacement, and undermines the dignity of already vulnerable families.

Goals

The Koloboi Feeding Program seeks to address hunger, enhance nutrition, and support the well-being of vulnerable populations in Turkana County. It also aims to improve health outcomes, educational performance, and community resilience in this region impacted by drought and poverty.

Activities

Activities may include:

  • Operate community-based feeding centers to provide daily hot meals to vulnerable individuals, such as children, pregnant and lactating mothers and elderly persons, and train community volunteers;
  • Provide daily meals in schools and monitor attendance and academic progress;
  • Screen children and mothers regularly and refer malnourished cases to health facilities;
  • Source food locally when possible and ensure safe, transparent storage and procurement;
  • Support local committees and run awareness sessions on nutrition, hygiene, and food security.

Myriad Canada is working with Embakasi Slums Hygiene and Sanitation Program (ESHaSP) on this project, a Kenyan community-based organization dedicated to promoting hygiene education, improved sanitation, and community-driven environmental conservation through advocacy and practical action. Since its founding in 2009, ESHaSP has provided essential support such as sanitary towels, school uniforms, and food to vulnerable children.
