Context
The failure to educate girls comes with a high cost. Low educational levels for girls is detrimental not only on the girls themselves, but also has broad and long-term impacts on their children, households, communities and societies. When girls aren’t educated, they earn less; are subject to higher rates of childhood marriage; face poor health and nutrition outcomes for themselves and their children; and experience a lack of agency and decision making power.
While India’s government has implemented some programs aimed at encouraging girls to attend school, a number of hurdles remain such as financial restrictions, household responsibilities, early marriage and lack of access to proper hygiene facilities at school.
Currently, only one in three girls in India completes their education. But females who have had even a primary education will earn between 14 percent and 19 percent more than those who have received no education at all, and females with secondary education can expect to make nearly twice as much. Those with a college education will benefit almost three times as much as those with no education.
Goals and Activities
- To provide Beant Agya scholarships for young women to attend Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College of Education;
- Children from kindergarten are also supported for ten years in the school. The donations also support two teachers to teach them in English from a young age to give them more opportunities in the future.
- The cost of the scholarships for the girls is from $100.00 to $300.00. The cost of the English teacher is $2400.00 a year.
- Students must reach a 76% and above average to maintain their scholarships. The school hires the best teachers who can inspire, motivate and speak English.
The Young Men Sikh Association (YMSA) is a charitable organisation in Canada under number 890948391 RR 0001. The donations raised will be given to this organization to support the girls and the school, for more information visit GTB Khalsa College for Women .
