Context

Rural Tanzania is home to more than 80% of the country’s poor, with 70% of the population living on less than $2 per day, according to the World Bank. Access to healthcare is severely limited due to poverty, low education levels and a shortage of medical facilities. With only one physician per 20,000 people, and just one in five serving rural communities, most rural populations are critically underserved.

Maternal health outcomes are particularly alarming: Tanzania’s maternal mortality rate is 556 deaths per 100,000 live births, and only 55% of rural deliveries are attended by a skilled provider, compared with 87% in urban areas.

Goals

The project aims to support access to high-quality locally-led healthcare in critically underserved rural northern Tanzania.

Activities

Activities may include:

  • Equipping the OR space in the Maternity Center with essential surgical instruments (anesthesia machines, surgical lights, monitoring devices and plumbing for oxygen and medical gases) meeting international safety and infection control standards.
  • Supporting Hospital staff salaries.

Key Performance Indicators to be Reached (KPIs)

  • Centralizing all maternal surgical procedures in one location to reduce delays for high-risk deliveries and improve continuity of care.
  • Monitoring maternal and neonatal outcomes to ensure ongoing quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Ensuring continued operation by partially supporting staff salaries.

Myriad Canada is working with the Foundation for African Medicine and Education on this project, a non-profit registered in Tanzania whose vision is “a successful healthy society with better social services that intend to meet the medical needs of ordinary Tanzanian people, including underserved populations in the most rural parts of the region”. For nearly two decades, FAME Hospital, a 66-bed District Level-1 Hospital, has served as a critical medical center in rural northern Tanzania, providing high-quality, locally-led healthcare to communities that are among the most underserved in the country. Its integrated approach, combining infrastructure, specialized services and workforce development, has improved health outcomes for hundreds of thousands of mothers, children and families while building a sustainable, Tanzanian-led model capable of meeting future healthcare needs.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes.
