Context

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization committed to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. UNHCR works to ensure that anyone forced to flee violence, war, disaster, or persecution has the right to seek asylum and find refuge.

According to the UNHCR Global Trends Report 2024, 123.2 million people were forcibly displaced by the end of 2024, an increase of 7 million people compared to the previous year. This staggering number reflects the ongoing impact of persecution, conflict, violence, and human rights violations worldwide.

Yet, despite these growing needs, the humanitarian funding available to UNHCR has sharply declined. In 2024, UNHCR was able to assist 36.4 million people, down from 38.5 million in 2023. In early 2025, UNHCR announced a global restructuring, including the closure or downsizing of offices, a 30% reduction in staffing costs, and the elimination of 3,500 staff positions. Even essential programmes, such as education, healthcare, clean water, and financial aid to vulnerable families, have been impacted.

As Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, stated: “Aid brings a degree of stability in deeply volatile situations. Investing in aid not only saves lives; it also avoids higher costs down the line when desperate people are forced to move on in search of safety.”

Goals & Activities

  • The purpose of this Fund is to support UNHCR’s response to the growing global displacement crisis, including providing access to shelter, food, water, medical care, and other forms of vital assistance. The fund will also help to ensure protection and dignity for millions of refugees and displaced people worldwide.  
  • The donations raised will be used to set up an Endowment fund and provide long-term support for UNHCR Canada in its mission to support those who have bene forced to flee their homes.
