Empowering Women & Girls Across Africa

Context

Across Africa, women & girls and youth continue to face systemic barriers that limit their ability to learn, lead and thrive. Whether through unequal access to education and skills, restricted economic opportunities, the absence of supportive environments, and even chronic poor nutrition – these obstacles not only hold back their own personal potential; they interfere with their families’ and communities’ abilities to prosper. Supporting women’s and youth leadership and active participation at all levels creates conditions where women and youth become key contributors to driving lasting – and systemic – change.

Goals

Equip women and youth across Africa with the knowledge, skills, nutrition and supportive environments needed to strengthen their wellbeing, expand their opportunities and break persistent and intergenerational cycles of poverty.

Activities

Graça Machel Trust works to improve the lives of women, children and youth across Africa by strengthening the systems, knowledge and opportunities needed to break cycles of poverty. Focusing on building skills, expanding access to resources and creating supportive environments where everyone can learn, earn and participate fully in their communities, women, children and youth are empowered to build more stable, healthy and prosperous lives and break intergenerational cycles of poverty.

Funds raised in Canada will be used to fund charitable activities such as:

• Scholarships for women from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds to access postgraduate studies and join the ranks of a new generation of highly qualified women;
• Nutrition initiatives to address the prevalence and consequences of malnutrition and their lasting effects on the cognitive and physical development of children and their families;
• Education initiatives aimed at reintegrating thousands of out-of-school children back into education by tackling barriers like child marriage and poverty, using partnerships, teacher training, and accelerated learning;
• Capacity building to support African women-owned and women-led businesses as drivers of economic growth, including through collaboration to encourage internal markets and autonomous women entrepreneurs’ business and trading relationships and communities;
• Leadership training for adolescent girls so they become self-assured individuals who positively influence their schools, communities and future careers by fostering resilience, responsibility and problem-solving skills.

• Improve health outcomes by ensuring access to adequate and appropriate nutrition.

Myriad Canada is working with the Graça Machel Trust on this project, a nonprofit that works across Africa on women’s economic and financial empowerment, leadership and good governance; child health and nutrition; education and more.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes.
