Context
Poverty and inequality are human-made, so they can be unmade. Embedded in every person is the potential to build a better life. What is missing too often is the opportunity. Every day, one in ten people across the world is forced to live in extreme poverty, on less than USD$3 a day. With half a century of experience of working with people living in the most vulnerable circumstances, BRAC has learned that anyone can change their life, if they have the tools needed to unlock their agency, rebuild their confidence and become self-reliant.
Goals
The aim of this fund is to enable extreme and ultra-poor households to achieve socioeconomic resilience, in order to progress along a pathway out of extreme poverty in Asia and Africa.
Activities
Activities may include:
- Providing preventive, protective, and promotive mechanisms to support basic income security such as consumption support, crisis relief, and access to health, and education.
- Regular check-ins and lifeskills support that build confidence and resilience, and promote social inclusion and positive behavioral change relevant to self-sustainability, security, and well-being.
Myriad Canada is working with BRAC USA on this project, a US-based nonprofit whose mission is to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, diseases, and social injustice in 12 countries across Asia and Africa. Their interventions aim to achieve large scale positive changes through economic and social programs that enable women and men to realize their potential.
Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes. As a member of the Myriad Alliance with offices in Canada, the US, Europe, Asia and Australia, Myriad Canada has a vast international network and extensive practical expertise.
