Context
At a time when relationships across cultures and countries are increasingly important, the North America–Japan Cultural Fund will support new opportunities for Canadians and Japanese to connect, learn from one another, and work together.
Inspired by the vision of John D. Rockefeller 3rd, who invested in people, institutions, and cultural exchange to help rebuild understanding between Japan and North America after World War II, the Fund carries that spirit forward for a new generation.
Working with the International House of Japan and the American Friends of the I-House, the Fund will support charitable initiatives in Canada that strengthen connections with Japan and bring Canadian perspectives into broader North America–Japan exchange.
Our goal is to create meaningful connections that help people and communities learn from one another, build trust, and find new approaches to challenges we share.
Activities
The North America–Japan Cultural Fund will support initiatives in Canada such as:
- Courageous Convenings: Bringing people together through cultural diplomacy and dialogue, including programs that explore how practices such as the Japanese tea ceremony, arts, and culture can create space for conversation, understanding, and peace.
- Community Exchanges: Connecting Canadian and Japanese communities to share practical knowledge and experience on challenges such as community revitalization, demographic change, climate resilience, and cultural preservation.
- North America–Japan Philanthropy Fellows: Creating opportunities for Canadian philanthropic leaders to learn alongside peers from Japan and the United States, build lasting relationships, and explore new approaches to philanthropy and cross-border collaboration.
Together, these initiatives and others will help strengthen the people-to-people and institutional relationships that connect Canada and Japan—and create new opportunities for us to contribute to the future of the broader North America–Japan relationship. Please join us!
