Context
Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula is one of the most biologically rich places on Earth, home to approximately 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity despite covering less than 0.001% of the planet’s land surface.
Despite living alongside extraordinary natural heritage, many children in the region’s remote rural communities have limited access to high-quality environmental education and meaningful extracurricular opportunities. At the same time, increasing pressures such as habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and unsustainable resource use continue to threaten the ecosystems on which local communities depend.
Protecting the Osa Peninsula requires more than safeguarding protected areas; it requires empowering the next generation to understand, value, and actively care for their natural environment.
Goals
Empower children and young people in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula to become lifelong guardians of their natural environment through environmental education, experiential learning, citizen science, and youth leadership.
Activities
The project will deliver an integrated environmental education program built around four complementary pillars:
- Environmental Education: Deliver interactive environmental education sessions in 11 rural schools, covering biodiversity, forests, wildlife, marine ecosystems, climate change, waste management, sustainable living, and conservation leadership.
- Experiential Learning: Organize educational field trips, environmental camps, and exchange visits that allow children to explore protected areas, learn from other communities, and experience nature firsthand.
- Citizen Science & Conservation Action: Engage students in hands-on conservation activities, including biodiversity monitoring, bird observation, pollinator gardens, school composting systems, habitat restoration, tree planting, and community environmental campaigns.
- Youth Leadership & Community Engagement: Strengthen four environmental youth groups where children develop leadership skills, design community initiatives, and inspire environmental stewardship among their peers, families, and the wider community.

Myriad Canada is working with the Corcovado Foundation on this project, a nonprofit whose mission is to protect Costa Rica’s natural heritage for future generations, through its sustainable development, by promoting education and community empowerment, the strengthening of protected wildlife areas and the promotion of tourism.
Through educating children on the importance of protecting the biodiverse land they inhabit, supporting sustainable tourism for local businesses, and partnering with landowners and stewards on sustainable land management practices, such as riparian vegetation, regenerative agriculture and reforestation, they strive to promote harmony between people and nature.
Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact.
