Context

The only intentional life-sharing community in Greece for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and their caregivers is located in Keramou, Galaxidi. It is a consciously outward-looking community, striving to integrate each of its members into local society while also enriching the local community through its interaction with them.

Within its model of inclusion and emotional connection, it strives to give its members with ID/DD choice and control over their lives and to create the conditions to fulfil their needs and aspirations over their entire adult lifetime, both within the community and in society around it. Similarly, it aims to fulfil the needs and aspirations of its caregivers for their long term or even lifelong engagement.

Goals

  • Promote inclusion in every aspect of life, both within the community and in local society.
  • Create an environment of warmth, acceptance and mutual learning where each member, with or without a disability, can contribute to the community in their own way.
  • Enable each member to develop their unique potential through creative work and direct interaction with nature.

Activities

This project may include the following activities:

  • Physical infrastructure projects: Upgrading a fourth home, creating specific housing for the volunteers and installing photovoltaics panels;
  • Event coordination: supporting the annual Mazi STI Giorti (celebrating together) festival, which connects the local community with participants from further afield. The event includes concerts, running races, school tournaments and artistic collaborations.

Myriad Canada is working with ESTIA AGIOS NIKOLAOS on this project, a nonprofit whose mission is to support and promote the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within a community, together with those who care for and support them. The organization mobilizes the broader local society to participate in the community and strives to serve as a national and international model for life-sharing communities for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

ESTIA was created in 1992 by Kurt and Doris Eisenmeier, founders and life-long residents of two innovative communities in Germany for adults with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact. As a member of the Myriad Alliance with offices in Canada, the US, Europe, Asia and Australia, Myriad Canada has a vast international network and extensive practical expertise.
