Context

Education remains one of the most powerful tools for reducing poverty, promoting social mobility and creating sustainable economic growth. By investing in a student’s education today, we are helping to build stronger families, healthier communities, and a more prosperous future.

For many students, however, the dream of obtaining a university education is threatened by poverty. While government financial aid provides valuable support, it often does not fully cover the cost of tuition, accommodation, books, meals, and other essential living expenses for students from low-income households.

For these students, a bursary is the opportunity to complete their studies, secure meaningful employment, support their families, and help break the cycle of poverty for future generations.

University of KwaZulu-Natal

Located in Durban, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) – recognized as a registered university in Canada – is one of Africa’s leading universities, internationally recognized for excellence in teaching, research and community engagement. Formed in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville, UKZN has built a reputation for producing graduates who make a meaningful contribution to society, both in South Africa and around the world.

Today, UKZN is home to more than 50,000 students studying across five campuses in the vibrant province of KwaZulu-Natal. The University employs approximately 5,000 academic, professional and support staff and offers internationally recognised qualifications through its four Colleges (College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science; College of Health Sciences; College of Humanities; College of Law and Management Studies).

As one of South Africa’s largest public universities, UKZN attracts talented students from every province of the country, as well as from across the African continent and beyond. The University is deeply committed to creating opportunities for students with academic potential, regardless of their financial circumstances.
