Context

Sub-Saharan Africa is at the epicentre of a global learning crisis. According to the World Bank and UNESCO, 87% of 10-year-olds in the region cannot read and understand a simple story. In Ghana specifically, many children progress through basic school without foundational literacy skills, leaving them unable to benefit from higher-level subjects. The situation is compounded by large class sizes, inadequate teacher training, and limited access to age-appropriate reading materials, particularly for children from low-income households.

The consequences of this learning poverty are severe: poor academic performance, higher dropout rates, reduced confidence and critical thinking skills, limited economic opportunities, and entrenched intergenerational poverty.

Goals

The Reading Champions Scholarship Program aims to provide 12,000 underprivileged children across basic schools in Ghana with a full year of subsidized access to a digital literacy platform, removing cost as a barrier to quality reading instruction.

Activities

Activities of this project may include:

  • Subsidized access to the digital library, over 4,000 curated books with comprehension quizzes, for one full academic year per child.
  • Structured engagement through weekly library periods and weekly celebration assemblies recognizing top readers.
  • Monitoring and reporting, including weekly performance tracking, monthly reports to parents, termly reviews, and a comprehensive end-of-term report measuring books read, reading growth, and comprehension outcomes.

Myriad Canada is working with the PerbiCubs Foundation on this project, a nonprofit whose mission is to support quality education, alleviate poverty, promote gender equality, and remove barriers to literacy by expanding access, building a reading culture, and investing in research and innovation in Ghana.
